This past Monday, I celebrated my birthday a few days early with some friends by going out to dinner. I got to choose where we would dine and after looking at suggestions I settled on Peasant Bistro. It’s right in the heart of downtown overlooking Centennial Olympic Park. I couldn’t resist this Mussel Monday special. There are 3 options for this all you can eat mussels special… we opted for the one that included bottomless wine.
The mussels are prepared in 3 different ways: au nage, provencal and curry. My first (yes, first meaning I had more than 1 lol) round was the mussels au nage. They came in a big white bowl (whose lid doubled as a discard plate for shells) and they gave you a hearty serving. The broth was quite delicious. There was a little bit of pasta sitting in the broth which was good but unnecessary. I’m sure it was there as a filler since the mussels were unlimited. The 2nd round I tried the curry mussels which were also pleasing but not as good as the au nage. Almost halfway in I found myself tire of the curry flavor. We did try the mussels provencal but by accident (the server thought we ordered it). Of the 3, au nage is definitely my preference.
To accompany my mussels I got a small plate of fried green tomatoes, a Southern staple. Topped with crumbled goat cheese and a roasted red pepper sauce, these babies did not disappoint.
We did indulge in dessert. I am not a big dessert person but this damn Pecan Sticky Bread Pudding was divine…. heavenly even. This moist bread pudding came with a caramel pecan sauce and a scoop of vanilla icing. (I actually got one brought home to me 2 days later and I have determined its the sauce that makes this dessert.) We scarfed this plate clean and we were close to licking it but the plate was taken away before we could.
And being the gluttons that we are, we also got a creme brulee with fresh berries. What more can I say other than that it was smooth, creamy, and yummy.
All in all, a great birthday dinner. Definitely worth checking this restaurant out… especially on All You Can Eat Mussels Monday (such a great deal)!
